Managed network of Sun/Oracle Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and IBM AIX servers. Wrote, tested, and implemented migration of Solaris 10 servers from VxVM/SVM to ZFS, and served as ZFS subject matter expert. Rewrote Solaris installation and systems standards documentation to automate new builds and leverage ZFS snapshots. Saved support and licensing costs by bringing Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) into the enterprise, writing and testing installation, updates, and system standards documentation. Designed and built a network of UNIX machines that hosted a subscription-based Web business publishing medical textbooks and journals for physicians and med students. Was responsible for ensuring site uptime, being on-call 24x7 as well as architecting systems with load balancing and failover capabilities in order to prevent emergencies. Wrote utilities using ksh, Perl, Expect, C. Developed company intranet using HTML and CGI programming. Implemented monitoring and notification system. Managed users and groups, and was instrumental in devising and carrying out data backup, recovery, and archival strategies.

Started, as so many of us do, at the Help Desk. Was promoted to Help Desk Manager, and along the way demonstrated strong UNIX administration skills. Moved into role as primary administrator of HPUX, IRIX, Linux, and Solaris systems. Planned and conducted OS and software upgrades and audited system performance and tuning. Managed user accounts, X terminals, and printers. Developed original applications and utilities and took over maintenance coding tasks and porting to different architectures.
